This is the gameboy advance version of the platform game from 1993. You play as bat Aero, who have to stop the mad scientist Edgar Ektor, who is trying to rid the world of amusement and fun. So you jump through the circus-style levels, using different kinds of machines such as catapults, cannons, bubble machines, platforms, etc., collecting various power-ups such as cheese, soda, keys, clocks, etc. and avoiding lethal obstacles.

This was my first time really sitting down and playing Aero the Acro-Bat. I never really had interest in the game when it was originally released, and after my playthrough now, I remain unimpressed. While not broken, the control is a bit too erratic, the overall gameplay can become stale and annoying and while it does throw some challenge your way from time to time, it’s a rather short game that leaves you feeling unfulfilled. Since this is a bare bones port with nothing of note added, I have a hard time recommending downloading this one. This game does has it’s fans, but it’s not going to grab too many new fans. If your curious, try it out, but don’t expect to be presented with a hidden gem from the past.

Aero The Acro-Bat isn’t exactly a must-play 16-bit game, but the added features in this rerelease help curb some of its more annoying aspects. For better or worse, it is fully symbolic of its era, and the inclusion of some cool extras help place its context in the history of gaming. If you’re interested in trying out a rather challenging and sometimes very clever 2D platformer, you might want to give Aero a look. Just be prepared to die more often than a rookie Elden Ring player with a broken controller. Classic gaming enthusiasts will definitely applaud this game seeing the light of day again, but it doesn’t come out of the era unscathed. Shinyuden’s work done to do just that is worth complimenting to some extent, but it doesn’t erase how rough this game can be for some. Aero the Acro-Bat shows flashes of a good platformer, but the foundation laid by its original developers might be too big of an obstacle for some modern gamers. The door price may be low, the rest of the franchise is on the way, but this game isn’t going to please everyone. If you can stomach the rough edges it comes with, there is enjoyment to be had. Just don’t go in expecting it to meet the level of the more legendary platformers of the era. Review code provided by Ratalaika Games for Switch.

I am sure that Aero the Acro-Bat has never been an amazing game or a staple from the 16-bit era of gaming, but I expected more from it. I don’t even think that Ratalaika did a poor job remastering the title; there are lots of neat extras and a competent rewind function in order to deal with the many leaps of faith you gotta perform. It’s just a somewhat underwhelming game, yet another mediocre mascot platformer released at a time when everyone wanted to have their own Sonic the Hedgehog. I appreciate the extra easter eggs and preservation efforts, but I just didn’t have fun playing Aero the Acro-Bat at all. Aero the Acro-Bat is available now on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X, PC and Switch.
