Overview

Among the Sleep is a first person horror adventure, in which you play a two year old child. After waking up in the middle of the night to mysterious sounds, you start exploring the dark looking for comfort. The game explores horror through atmosphere and exploration, not with scores and combat systems. In Among the Sleep you’re vulnerable, scared, and trying to make sense of the world

It’s an original concept and a very unique experience. Not to sound like a broken record, but Among the Sleep feels like it’s over just as it’s getting into its groove and that’s really my only major complaint.

Among the Sleep executed this flawlessly, and it combines this aspect with a wonderful journey through the dreams and life of a child. I would recommend this game to anyone who’s looking for an experience that will leave you with goosebumps, and a story that will leave you wanting more.

Despite the great storytelling mechanics, I can’t help but wish there was a little more to the game. When all was said and done it wrapped up in a handful of hours at most and I was left craving more. It’s especially a let down because the game invents such new ways of thinking about the horror genre, and it left so much to be expanded on.

The richly detailed, other-worldly environments are interesting, engaging and strange, but lack the deep unheimlich queasiness of the house you inhabit at the beginning. The sound design remains excellently creepy throughout, but the jump-scares lose their bite once you see and recognise the monster they herald, and avoiding it presents little challenge.

If you allow yourself to exist in the moment, Among the Sleep will take you back to a time when a teddy bear was your shield, and you'd think twice about going to sleep without checking under the bed. This review is based on a pre-release Steam download of Among the Sleep, provided by Krillbite Studio.
