Overall there is a nice sense of scale and mechs are always fun to play in. It sounds like the multiplayer component is a lot of fun but if you are like me, you may find it hard to find a game to join. I’m happy playing single player though so it doesn’t bother me too much (though free movement in a mech would be nice). If you are only really interested in the muliplayer just keep in mind it might be hard to find a match… but if you are keen on the single player then this is certainly a decent option.

Expanding on the foundation of the single player experience, Archangel Hellfire completes the package by adding an excellent PvP mode, and an interesting if somewhat short Co-op experience. With the promise of additional maps on the way, Hellfire breathes new life into this title.

Archangel: Hellfire is the most fun I’ve had inside of a VR mech to date. The multiplayer action is top-notch with a ton of build variety and extreme differences in playstyles between each type of mech and maps are just big enough to really showcase the scale of combat. While the co-op mode is a bit lackluster with only one map and simple waves of enemies, it provides a good training ground to loosen up before PvP. I hope to see ongoing support for this title because the core gameplay mechanics feel excellent. You can download Archangel: Hellfire on Steam, the Oculus Home Store, Green Man Gaming, and the Humble Bundle Store for $19.99 with official support for Rift and Vive VR headsets.

Overall, ArchAngel: Hellfire does a good job with PvP. The maps are nice, the mechs and controls are solid, and there isn’t a lot to dislike about what Skydance Interactive put together. I will say that the co-op leaves a little to be desired, but that’s not the reason you will want to play Hellfire. Hopefully more updates in the future will improve upon this solid groundwork.

From top to bottom, Archangel: Hellfire has solidified itself as one of the best VR exclusive experiences on the market. It strikes all the checkmarks that gamers expect in their non-VR shooters, but implements virtual reality in an easily understood and immersive way.

Within the VR community, a mech title is something that is regularly touted as being something that could bring the best out of the platform. On the evidence of Archangel: Hellfire, this is certainly the case. The production values in the single-player campaign do a fine job of rivalling Skydance Interactive's movie arm, and the graphical fidelity and scale is impressive. However, the multiplayer expansion adds a real shot in the arm and provides the potential for a community to spring up and really enjoy this unique experience together.

As a free-to-play game, the PvP version of the online multiplayer Mech-based battle arena Archangel:Hellfire is an obvious must-have for fans of the mech genre. The co-op version requires the purchase of the Archangel single-player campaign, but that too is a pretty good deal. While the campaign is a rail shooter, which won't please players that prefer to have a bit more control over the path they take, it is quite good too. The co-op battles are a lot of fun, but an inefficient means of setting up the gaming sessions can be burdensome. * The product in this article was sent to us by the developer/company. I've been fascinated with video games and computers for as long as I can remember.

With just a few mechs and maps, Archangel: Hellfire feels more like a small add-on than a full expansion at the moment, but it’s a signpost suggesting the direction in which the developers might take a sequel. The impressive control mechanics, great combat, and genre-high visuals suggest that a well-produced, high-mobility mech game would be a great idea. Hopefully the publishers see enough value in this experiment to turn Archangel into the grand mech combat franchise it has the potential to become. Disclosures: This game is developed and published by Skydance Interactive.
