If you’re a fan of the shoot ’em up genre, then you have to add this game to your collection. The HD look is great for the game, and the challenge is still as good as it was back when it released on the SEGA Genesis. I died a lot in order to write this Assault Suit Leynos review, but I always kept coming back for more!

Assault Suit Leynos is very much an arcade title, plain and simple. With only a handful of levels, the grueling difficulty of Classic Mode gives the game more worth. Honestly, it feels like those old arcade classics that were nearly unbeatable, eating up all of your quarters. More levels would have been nice—this game is very short—but the different modes and stage scoring give you some reason to come back.

Assault Suit Leynos is exactly what a remake should be. It takes everything that worked about the original and improves upon it with modern flourishes. The original was fine for its time, but with greatly-improved controls and graphics, everything is more enjoyable now than it was then.

Though prospective pilots may have a tough time giving the green light to Assault Suit Leynos due to the hefty price tag, it’s an impeccable remake of a classic, underappreciated Genesis game that delivers all that could be asked of it and more. Disclosures: This game was developed by Dracue Software and published by Rising Star Games.

Assault Suit Leynos is an odd game to both be modernized and ported to the west. That being said, I'm glad that it was as it shows just how fantastic retro gaming can be.

Sporting a varied campaign that's bolstered by satisfyingly weighty gameplay, Assault Suit Leynos is a good way to enjoy a hardcore classic. It isn't especially friendly to newcomers and at times its overwhelming mission design can be a burden, but it still stands strong as a solid mech shooter that'll put your piloting skills to the test – even 26 years after its original release.
