Bannermen is a real-time strategy (RTS) game, developed by the Swedish studio Pathos Interactive. The game will test your abilities as a battle commander where the main tasks consist of base building, resource management and battling enemy armies. The game takes place in a semi-fantasy medieval world that has been brutally damaged due to decades of war, starvation and natural disasters. The people are in desperate need of a powerful leader that can unite the kingdom. Many tribes claim their right, but there is only room for one banner in the kingdom capital. Command your troops through the war-ridden land, place your banner and let no one stand in your way to fame and glory!

Bannermen is a good RTS game. It is intuitive and easy to jump into and the campaign is satisfying. The storyline is engaging enough, and Lord Berrian is enough to make any gamer girl swoon. The only thing about it I can criticize is that I don’t think it has anything that makes it stand out among other games of this genre.

Bannermen still has enjoyable moments of gameplay as armies clash together, but it fails to make its mark on the traditional RTS formula with any tweaks or significant depth. Given that the game retails at a $27 price point, RTS enthusiasts will likely still have a good - albeit likely brief - time with the title.

Imitation that falls flat, Bannermen is a poor attempt at a real-time strategy game that fails to live up to the most basic of expectations.

Bannermen’s appreciation of genre greats can be easily seen through the cracks in its shoddy construction. However, in between a single faction with a small, uninspired roster, bland story and writing, and very few options in terms of tactics and strategy, it’s tough to recommend. As rooted as it is in the genre’s past, it’s nowhere close to mastering what made RTS titles of yore great, ultimately being just a flimsy, soulless imitator.
