Last thing you remember, Vicky Vale drugged you and revealed to be Lady Arkham, the leader of Children of Arkham terrorist group. Anything after that is blurry at best. Now, Bruce Wayne wakes in the Arkham Asylum, and not as a guest but an inmate. Turns out he beat Oswald Cobblepot to a pulp after being injected by the new drug, and until he finds a way to flush his system his mind will keep on playing tricks on him.

One weird bug aside, this was a tremendous episode. Telltale’s creative use of Batlore was on full display with their low key use of his most famous villain, and they created an episode that managed to stand on its own while also leaving a jumping off point for the season finale. Guardian of Gotham delivers on all fronts.

Overall I'd say the game remains stable. There's not much point to doing ranking for individual aspects, but in comparison to Episodes 1-3, the story takes a small hit this time. However, replayability gets a nice boost for sure and a couple small tweaks introduce just enough variation to the mix to give gameplay a small upward adjustment.

Fans of all things Batman: if you have not yet checked out Batman: The Telltale Series, now is the perfect time to do; it gets better with every episode. Episode 4: Guardian of Gotham shows a Bruce Wayne fighting a war for Gotham on two fronts: the war in his mind and the physical war against the Children of Arkham. Thankfully, Bruce can always rely on his wits to get him out of a jam, because, thanks to newly-aggressive enemies, he can no longer put his full trust behind his tech and gadgets. With less of an opportunity to wear the cape and cowl of The Dark Knight, Bruce is perhaps the most vulnerable he has ever been in this episode. Telltale has humanized Bruce Wayne/Batman, making him seem like less of a super hero and more of an Average Joe, which isn’t a bad thing, as it makes him far more relatable. This is Bryce Wayne as I have never seen him before.

With a terrifying new Joker, high stakes, and some genuinely touching moments, Guardians of Gotham serves as a fantastic prelude to the upcoming finale. Batman: The TellTale Series: Episode 4: Guardian of Gotham Developer: TellTale Games Price: $24.99 for a Season Pass Platforms: PS3, PS4 (reviewed), Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, Mac, Android, iOS While I found TellTale’s previous episode of Batman, New World Order, to be underwhelming, I was shocked at how well Guardian of Gotham turned things around.

I say this each time but it deserves repeating… I both hate and love Telltale games. I really don’t like episodic gaming… I’m four chapters in now and still find it frustrating to get so invested in a story only to have it stop and then I have to wait for a month or so to pick it up again. But on the other hand… they really know how to tell a story (the solution to this problem is arguably to wait until the whole experience is released and then simply purchase it as one complete package). When we last saw Bruce Wayne he was not having the best day.
