Bo is a hand-drawn 2D Metroidvania based in a colorful world of Japanese folklore. You play as a tiny fox spirit that grows from lotus blossom after being blessed by the moon god. Use your legendary bō staff to bounce and move fluidly through a delightfully-demonic east asian fever dream. Use the tight movement and reset system to reach areas efficiently and gracefully or recover chaotically while floundering for footing.

Perhaps I shouldn’t have been so surprised at the quality of Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus. It does, after all, feature members of the same team that impressed with their Metroid fan game AM2R, before Nintendo politely (I guess) asked them not to. Arguably one of Nintendo’s smartest moves yet given the results we have now, a bright and beautiful adventure that puts signature Metroidvania pathfinding and action to better use as a clever little blossom within an equally clever world. It’s a pure delight from start to finish, one that deserves all the attention amongst a sea of highly regarded titles already defining 2024, that captures the spirit of old-school action titles and stands out with unique visual palette. It is, in a word, breathtaking.

Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is a must-play 2D platformer that shines with its sublime movement mechanics and excellent level design. Despite a few narrative and comedic missteps, the game offers fulfilling exploration, captivating combat, and stunning visuals, making it one of the standout titles of 2024. The Good - Fantastic Movement and Exploration - Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus boasts impeccable movement with well-integrated abilities that create an addictively compelling gameplay loop. - Stellar Boss Design - The bosses of Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus cleverly utilize behaviors - Gripping Soundtrack - The songs throughout this adventure fit into the setting so strongly, further tethering you to become more attached to the gameplay progression, as any favorable soundtrack should. The Bad - Medicore Narrative and Writing - The writing's attempts at being humorous rarely ever land.

Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is one of those rare great games. Any Hollow Knight comparisons are valid, but the overall feel of Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus is very much its own.

While it might sound like I’m down on Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus in one way, I ended up loving the game a lot. The aesthetic, music, and traversal all come together to be a fantastic Metroidvania. I usually end up enjoying Humble Games’ published titles, but I was surprised and delighted by Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, and hope to buy the physical release soon. -Mikhail Madnani SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5 Select New Releases The New Denpa Men (Free) The Denpa Men make a return after seemingly disappearing with the Nintendo 3DS.
