Castle of Shikigami is a decent port of a fun but difficult bullet hell SHMUP. With some nightmarish enemy designs and plenty of replay value it’s a solid package let down by a dated appearance and its lack of extras.

I’m still glad that we’ve got Castle of Shikigami on Steam; flawed as it is, it’s a fun, creative shoot ‘em up and an important part of the genre’s history. Here’s hoping that its two sequels are also in the pipeline, because by most accounts, they’re a huge improvement on the good groundwork set down by this game.

Castle of Shikigami is shoot-em-up comfort food. Though it does not reinvent the wheel, it provides enough unique setpieces and mechanics to warrant at least one playthough. It might not reach the heights of Cave's offerings, but diehard fans of the genre may enjoy their time with this game. Shmups may be a dying breed, but Degica Games is keeping them alive with the localized Steam port of Castle of Shikigami.

The Castle Of Shikigami, while known and appreciated in the shmup community, is definitely not a top-tier bullet-hell. Its sequels are better and available on other consoles, so anyone who appreciates its bizarre aesthetic can get their fix elsewhere. It’s a noteworthy entry in the genre, but at this point it’s hardly a necessary one except for the most serious of shmup fans — in 2017, this game is obsolete. — Jarrod Johnston Disclosures: This game is developed by Alfa Systems and originally published by Taito in Japan with the new Steam version brought to us by Degica Games.
