Neither of the two layers in Circus Electrique would satisfy on its own. Of course, neither needs to – Zen Studios have built a game where two connected sets of systems continually reinforce each other. The result is an engine which keeps generating new problems and possibilities, sustaining the fun for hours on end. The combination of management and tactical elements might appeal to a relatively niche audience, but for that crowd Circus Electrique may be just the ticket.

At the end of the day, Circus Electrique is still a fun time. The RPG blend of character maintenance, challenging battles, and circus management has a lot here and it can sometimes be overwhelming, but if players take their time and keep up the performers’ devotion, they can explore the mean streets of London by the skin of their teeth. It’s not an easy game, but much like Darkest Dungeon, it can be rather rewarding.

The extreme amount of minutiae in Circus Electrique's simulation and tactical combination may seem overly complicated to some players, and to a point they wouldn't be wrong - the game could certainly stand to have a few less materials and there are moments it feels like the game is trying to do too much. However, one of the best parts of the game is it's only as complex as the player wants it to be, managing to be both complex yet accessible. Alongside the fact the game offers an always-available guide to all of its features, players can very well enjoy the game on a more surface level and still get enjoyment out of it. On the other hand, there are certainly players who will enjoy contemplating the perfect next move and ideal circus show lineup for ages, and Circus Electrique offers that style of player the complexity they desire in spades. Whether players are looking for their next strategic obsession or just some steampunk circus fun, Circus Electrique offers an experience almost every type of tactical fan can enjoy. Circus Electrique is available for Playstation consoles, Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Circus Electrique has a unique vibe, inventive art, and a thoroughly detailed devotion to its steampunk setting. For patient gamers with a love for stats and carefully managed decisions, the engaging combat will be icing on the cake. For some players, Circus Electrique might feel overwhelming, with one or two (or more) mechanics too many. There can be a lot of information on screen, and even more behind the scenes. The presentation is generally fantastic, but players used to simpler games might be surprised at how much work goes into running a circus.

Circus Electrique is a gorgeous game that juggles a lot of gameplay design ideas. It truly is a turn-based RPG with tactic-led elements, and circus management to boot. Sometimes it can be overwhelming, and sometimes it just doesn’t work because of the decisions that were made for it. Most of the time, it is a great game that takes a lot to get into and ultimately pays off with good gameplay.

Though likely to chase away those easily frustrated by complex systems, Circus Electrique offers more than enough surprises to entertain players for the couple dozen hours they’ll likely spend clearing its entire campaign. Unforgiving combat and the constant need to monitor resources demand the player’s attention, while the unique blend of genres rewards them with inventive new experiences. Juggling everything at once might be a bit more than some people are ready for, but that’s what a circus is for. Circus Electrique is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
