While it wouldn't be fair to compare the two games directly given the vastly different budget, it's undeniable that, if one is looking for a single cRPG to play in the near future, Dark Envoy couldn't be recommended over Larian Studios' masterpiece. On the other hand, if you've already exhausted everything there is to do in Baldur's Gate 3, Dark Envoy could offer you a new interesting cRPG to go through. Review code provided by the publisher. Dark Envoy is a solid cRPG featuring an interesting world and lore, a fun real-time with pause combat system with turn-based elements and a simple choice and consequence system that lends the experience to multiple playthroughs.

Dark Envoy isn’t without its strengths. The class system and skill trees lend themselves to interesting character builds and adventure party variety. But Director’s Cut or not, Dark Envoy simply had too many serious technical issues and minor hiccups. They constantly intruded into whatever fun the game was trying to give me. I’ll check back later to see if things improve but for now, Malakai and Kaela are on their own.

Dark Envoy has interesting gameplay mechanics locked behind some of the worst presentations I’ve seen in a while. It felt like the team behind the game was missing a few core pieces to make something special; With some better writers, animators, and artists, this game could have been a new favorite. As it stands, however, it’s an okay game with a lot of hiccups you have to look past to enjoy it. Try Hard Guides was provided with a PC review copy of this game.

Dark Envoy is a tactical RPG that tries to implement interesting ideas and features that make it somewhat redeemable, but its lack of an intriguing story, uninspired characters along with repetitive conquests get the best of it. Even though a lot of port issues have been addressed in its full release, some of the issues still remain prevalent as they were in its review build. Nevertheless, if you are new to the genre of tactical RPGs, Dark Envoy would be a decent place to start.
