Overview

De Mambo is The Dangerous Kitchen's first game that lets players take control of up to four characters locked in infinite mambo! Help them escape this horrible—and somewhat provocative—despair! Knock your opponent off the screen… and use your measly one button to attack with three levels of charge! Break the level however you decide (thanks to some flimsy architecture) to make your game marginally different each time you play.

While De Mambo might not be the most friendly platformer or accessible party fighter, its frantic play-style and unsettling atmosphere make it one of the most unique titles available for the Nintendo Switch. A lack of online multiplayer does stick as a rather big disappointment, but the single-player content and local multiplayer more than make up for a lack of global mamboing. Between dance-like controls and a single-player that's equal parts addictive and challenging, De Mambo not only manages to be an engagingly speedy platformer, it excels at it.

The gameplay does eventually get repetitive, although great strides have been taken to ensure this doesn’t happen too quickly and there is definitely much fun to be had here.

A noble attempt to offer an alternative to Smash Bros., and although there are some mechanical issues the multiplayer is still plenty of fun regardless. Pros: Four-player competitive mode is great if everyone knows what they’re doing.

Unfortunately, the entirety of De Mambo can be summed up with the initial letter sent by the developers. Yes, the style, music, level design, and ideas are all awesome. It is clear the developers put a ton of thought and heart into the game, pouring all their creative ideas into the title. Unfortunately, it never comes together in a package I am comfortable playing. The physics are abnormal and not easy to get used to, while the lack of online and health bar are weird oversights for a game like this. Overall, De Mambo nails down the unique factor for the game, but it does so without the basic building blocks required beforehand.

De Mambo is basically just another small indie pixel game for the Nintendo Switch and while there's nothing wrong with it, there certainly wasn't anything distinct about it.
