Echo Generation is a fun, unique way to spend 8 or so hours, and I don’t regret my time with it at all. It’s a charming experience full of engaging gameplay and fun secrets to discover, and should a sequel ever come out I’ll be first in line to discover those secrets as well.

Echo Generation: Midnight Edition is quirky, hilarious, and fun. It perfectly blends turn-based RPG combat with waves of nostalgia. Fans of RPGs, indie games, or just looking for a trip back to the 90s will have a blast with this game. My only gripe is that I wish the game were a little longer.

Echo Generation: Midnight Edition has a great voxel look, great references, and a fun story, but be prepared to do a lot of fetch quests and grinding to progress!

Upgraded graphics, fast travel, and a slew of quality-of-life upgrades that track items and improve combat flow, make Echo Generation Midnight Edition the definitive version. However, they feel like incremental gains rather than a wholesale re-evaluation, as the base game remains largely unchanged. Echo Generation Midnight Edition is available June 19th on Nintendo Switch (review platform), and PC via Steam. Echo Generation is a fun homage to several different flavours of genre greats. An exceptional aesthetic and sound design balances the eerie with the nostalgic well, and good writing goes some way to making up for dull mechanics and lacklustre progression.

It’s impossible to miss the overall sense of fun that permeates every aspect of Echo Generation. From its coming-of-age concept to its silly, sometimes irreverent narrative turns, to its memorable presentation, it’s clear this is a pure passion project for its developers. The narrative may not be the hardest-hitting stuff, and combat eventually becomes more of a chore than its payoff is worth due to spongy late-game enemies. But anybody who enjoys a sci-fi yarn that blends Stand by Me with The X-Files, or grew up in the ’90s, will still find plenty to enjoy here.

Echo Generation: Midnight Edition is worth a pop for those who love retro science fiction and want something new out of the genre.
