Your choices will decide the fates of many in Fallen Legion Revenants! The world is covered in miasma, and the remnants of mankind have taken refuge in a floating castle ruled by a madman. It’s nice to see a game trying new things, and Fallen Legion Revenants certainly does that, but the game’s actively hostile balancing takes away all of that goodwill. When the original Fallen Legion dual title launched in 2017, it offered some compelling ideas resulting in an experience that, while not without flaws, offered a good amount of engagement.

Fallen Legion Revenants makes a pretty decent fist of following up to Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory. The new additions to the battle system work well, as does the way the story is split between the two main characters. It isn’t hard to care about the narrative in place here, and this will keep you playing through to the climax just to find out what happens.

Fallen Legion Revenants is a fine, role-playing title for those looking for something to grind. A deviant from the traditional RPG, that hopes to present something unique within a split story that occurs simultaneously. A prevalent gameplay loop tries to wipe out some of its tedious moments, with repetition becoming an issue for the title midway, but the monotony can be overlooked for its excellent writing, innovative battle archetype, and its compelling tale that’s told between both Rowena and Lucien.

I had fun with the time I spent in Revenants. There are plenty of alternative endings to go for and an easy passage to go back in time and make amends in previous chapters. The combat system is solid and works well with the adventure-like sequences, even if their presentation isn’t the best. For fans of the previous game and those who like games with plenty of narrative avenues to take, I can easily recommend this game.

Between memorable characters, dialogue options that will make you seriously think, and intricate battle systems, Fallen Legion Revenants is a great start of the year for fans of JRPGs and single player experiences in general.
