Overview

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers is the third expansion pack to Final Fantasy XIV. The expansion takes players to the First, one of thirteen reflections of the Source that is being consumed by a Flood of Light. The main region visited is known as Norvrandt, which is roughly analogous to the Source's Eorzea, and is the only region in the world that has not yet succumbed to the Flood of Light.

With Shadowbringers, the development team has proven that they have perfected everything that Final Fantasy XIV is known for and does well. While I’d like to see them take more risks next time around, I can’t let that get in the way of just how masterfully crafted the main story quest is.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers is outstanding, and the pinnacle of Final Fantasy XIV so far. All of its elements blend beautifully for not only one of the strongest MMORPG experiences going, but one of the strongest RPG experiences full stop. The ability for its gameplay to cater to both players who prefer to play predominantly solo and those who prefer the more communal MMO elements is amazing, and the audio and narrative just further pile on the goodness. For those debating getting into Final Fantasy XIV, the release of Shadowbringers offers an ideal time to do it, with the very best awaiting them at the end.

Shadowbringers is the best MMORPG expansion in recent memory - perhaps of all-time. Its exceptionally few warts are the kind that will be removed with a few patches of tweaking, and what's left is skin so unblemished it rivals the sheen of a crystal. Shadowbringers tells the best story that Final Fantasy XIV has ever told, sets up an equally intriguing story to follow after, and does it while introducing us to some of the most awe-inspiring environments and battles we've ever seen in the genre.
