I see myself coming back to Flinthook for a while to come. Like many other Tribute games, it is tightly designed; nothing feels extra, nothing feels stark. I love mashing packs open. I love unlocking relics. I absolutely hate getting hit in this game, and I love that about it. If you’re wondering whether you might like Flinthook or not, take this test: Do you like video games? (Y/N). A copy of this game was provided by the publisher for review purposes.

Fun is a great word for describing Flinthook. It’s fun to play, it’s fun to look at, and it’s fun to explore. Games that are lovingly made are often a treat to play and Flinthook is no exception. If you’re a fan of roguelikes and platformers, treat yourself to one of the best games in the genre.

All told, Flinthook is a damn good time. It’s demanding with its difficulty but provides all of the tools necessary for success; not so cruel as to seem unfair but steadfast in its expectations of the player. The core mechanics are satisfying to use and well balanced, while offering the player ways to upset individual aspects of that balance through perks and carve out their own style.

I highly recommend giving Flinthook a go. Gameplay is fluid, graphics look great, and the fast-paced action will keep you coming back for more. Being able to level up and improve your odds of surviving after every fun you do is a great mechanic that will make it easier for those of you not used to roguelikes to get some quality time with this release. Even if you die and have to start from scratch, at least you can get stronger as you go!

Coupled them with an incredible soundtrack, boss battles that test your patience , skills and beautiful graphics and they make for a game that I can safely say, is one of the best of 2017.
