The whole thing is simply a meditative experience. The car ride is especially soothing as you just sit there and watch the scenery go by. It would probably be absolutely fantastic in VR. Let’s talk about that audio It would be a disservice to ignore the actual audio that this game brings.

Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between is fantastic, and manages to blend an introspective, meditative journey with discussions of interesting real world issues with ease. It may feel a little esoteric to some, but players who go into The Spaces Between with the right mindset will get not just an interesting indie game, but a mindful place to revisit in times when they need it. Silverstring Media's GLITCHHIKERS: THE SPACES BETWEEN is a science fiction narrative game that perfectly captures the feeling of self discovery and what it feels like to be small in a big world.

In spite of its flaws and lack of freedom, Glitchhikers is a sweet, casual game for anyone who is a little sad and in need of human connection. And really, who isn’t feeling that way these days?

As an overall experience, Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between is going to appeal a lot to some people and not at all to others. Personally, I loved what it was going for. Unfortunately, this version of the game suffers from some pretty severe tech issues in some of the Journeys. I ended up having to quit out of the train Journey because the framerate dove into the “seconds per frame" range. The highway had no issues. I’m hoping this is the result of a bug that can be fixed, but in its current state I have a lot of trouble recommending this game on the Switch. Play it, but perhaps not on this platform. SwitchArcade Score: 3/5 Kombinera ($14.99) Atari hits us with a new game that doesn’t draw on any of its own classic IP, and it’s actually pretty good.

I’m glad this game exists, but I wish there were more to it. There wasn’t enough variety in the virtual landscapes or in the characters’ conversations to make the long night drives or train journeys appealing beyond the second or third go-around. It is a game that wants us to think about the contradictions and complexities of being alive on this Earth, but also, it doesn’t seem to come from a place of great life experience. I would be fascinated to see what these developers would make in another 20 (or 50) years.

There’s absolutely no doubt that Glitchhikers will resonate with only certain players. Between its often-complex and challenging source material–combining deep philosophy and abstract concepts–its odd characters and scenes, and often baffling and unnerving art style, there are plenty of reasons why gamers may not understand it, never mind enjoy it. And yet, there’s a reason for everyone to play it, or just try it out for a few minutes.

Glitchhikers is an interesting place to explore, a suspended cat's cradle with weird art and angles that are more effective prompts for thoughts than any of the voice overs about place and meaning. When it's silent you have to have strange ideas to fill it up. But Glitchhikers as a whole feels less like a series of dreamy conversations and more a series of lectures being delivered at you by a self-conscious writer.
