Graven is an old-school dark fantasy first-person shooter that somehow feels like no other, taking cues not only from classics like Hexen but also throwing in elements of RPG, immersive sim, and more, creating a mix that feels unique and engaging. The game’s lengthy campaign does feature some questionable progression at times, with somewhat needless soulslike elements, time-consuming puzzles, and an uneven balance, but none of these flaws could ruin the game for me. Graven is not just a mechanically fun FPS, it’s also a great journey worth experiencing for yourself – but next to spellbooks, metal swords, and medieval armor, do remember to pack a healthy dose of patience, as its often convoluted design can cause some frustration.

Graven is a brilliant fusion of the best elements from Doom and Gothic, creating a game that shows great promise in both combat and exploration. Its old-school graphics, enhanced by modern technology, offer a charming and visually rich experience. While not without its flaws, the level design is generally excellent, and the gameplay is nothing short of exhilarating. The combination of fast-paced combat, intricate world-building, and a satisfying progression system makes Graven a easy recommendation for fans of classic and modern games alike. Whether you’re in it for the nostalgia or a new engaging action-adventure game, Graven is sure to have you hooked.

GRAVEN will be adored by the old-school brigade. It has that cozy retro feel, but also a good story and a great sense of world-building. The combat and action are fast-paced, building a frenzy at times, complete with a nice mix of melee and spells in your arsenal. The platforming is not the greatest, and there are some strange little bugs, but for the most part GRAVEN reminds of a time when first-person single-player games ruled the roost.

In terms of atmosphere and creativity, this game is going places. The mixture of retro first-person shooting and RPG elements is excellent, and the presentation was pretty good. When the combat clicked, it made for a fun time. Sadly, the game was also hampered by a ton of framerate issues, random freezes, a completely pointless and forgettable plot, and a lot of questionable design choices. I don’t think all of those issues can be easily fixed, but that doesn’t mean this is a surefire disaster.

Time-machine nostalgia and a pixel-perfect retro vibe can only carry Graven so far. Combat, exploration, and level design have to ferry the player to the end. Unfortunately, Graven has enough issues in these areas that its very promising premise isn’t quite fulfilled. Players who grew up with mid-90s shooters will appreciate what Graven has to offer, at least for a while. Ultimately, it might make them appreciate how far we’ve come.
