Basically, just about the only thing wrong with Guard Duty is that it’s thirty years too late to have the kind of audience it deserves. It’s a charming, likeable adventure game that borrows from the best parts of the genre’s past, and it’s very easy to get sucked into the couple of hours it’ll take you to finish it.

Guard Duty, for me, came out of nowhere, but instantly became a fun, short experience that I tip my cap to. It doesn’t revolutionize the genre (was never intending to, nor does it need to), it won’t make you suddenly like point-and-clicks if you don’t already (you’re missing out!), and yes, there are many other games in this old genre that have done it better. Nevertheless; for only $10, you can’t really go wrong, and if it supports future endeavors by this studio, all the better.

Guard Duty is a proper homage to classic point-and-click adventures that’s held back by some PC-to-console growing pains. While excessively easy, it’s a perfect choice for someone who wants to get their feet wet in a typically unforgiving genre.

Guard Duty is an ambitious adventure game, inspired by the likes of Discworld and Monkey Island, that doesn’t quite reach its goal. Still, if you’re looking for a short, funny romp through two distinct worlds the game definitely delivers.

Guard Duty feels like a blast from the past. The way it is set up and executed, it certainly feels like an old point and click adventure that has been ported. That is testament to the work and effort that has been put into the game to capture that experience. I’m sure this will be a pickup for fans of point and click games that like to adventure with a fair challenge. This game was reviewed based on Xbox One review code, using an Xbox One console.

If you’re a big fan of point-and-click adventures, especially those respecting the genre’s heyday, you’ll find Guard Duty to be a good game. I can’t give it as high a recommendation as first thought due to some story aspects and the way they’re intertwined, but I liked it enough that I’m hoping for a sequel. If it’s funded by Kickstarter, I hope the backers have enough sense to push for a less generic name, too.
