While a bit light on content, GUNVOLT RECORDS Cychronicle pulls from the greatest rhythm games to create something worthy of The Azure Striker. For those who can’t get enough idols - or catchy bops - this title is all too happy to make sure one’s concert is a big success. An adept genre shift for the series, the Azure Striker Gunvolt series of side-scrollers pivots to the rhythm genre with the release of Inti Creates’ GUNVOLT RECORDS Cychronicle.

I had an absolute blast playing GUNVOLT RECORDS Cychronicle for this review. Not only does it feature fantastic artwork and a variety of pumping tunes to enjoy, but there’s plenty of challenge for all gamers. Plus, if I know Inti Creates, they’ll find a way to totally outdo themselves in any future musical adventures. So, if you love the Gunvolt series and want a refreshing change of pace, this is absolutely the game for you.

Gunvolt Records Cychronicle works great for what it is: a spin-off game with fanservice to Gunvolt fans, the game including CD versions of the series’ songs and all. But it’s also a fun rhythm game for anyone to pick up and play—it might even be convincing enough for new players to check out INTI’s catalogue of fun action platformers like the Gunvolt series. ∎

Gunvolt Records Cychronicle is a confusing release, but one elevated by its amazing music and solid gameplay. I wish it had more game modes and in-game content outside the core rhythm game though. On Steam Deck, Gunvolt Records Cychronicle looks and plays amazing even with touchscreen controls. I don’t see myself bothering with the game on Xbox or PS5 after how good it feels on Steam Deck out of the box. Gunvolt Records Cychronicle Steam Deck PC review score: 3.5/5 News This week, NIS America announced that Ys X: Nordics will be released in the West in Fall 2024 for PC, PS5, PS4, and Switch.

The Gunvolt series has fantastic music, and GUNVOLT RECORDS: Cychronicle feels like a natural spin-off. It also plays pretty well. I’m just disappointed in Inti Creates excluding so many tracks to sell separately and the final 3D model designs for the three heroines. If you enjoy the series’ songs, it’s probably a good idea to check the tracklist to see if ones you enjoy are in the base game and maybe pick it up if they are.

Gunvolt Records: Cychronicle is all about the music, and these 15 tracks for $15 are what you’re getting here. The gameplay isn’t worth exploring due to the lack of in-game rewards or even a reason to play with everything unlocked from the beginning, so get this game for the concerts and root for the best girl, Lola. Sadly, even the quality of those concerts is hurt. The saving grace for the entire package is the music, and for that, I will say this experience passes because these are some of the best tracks in gaming.
