Haikuna is a word search game set inside The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Don Quixote. Players teleport around these stories to find the words to haiku written during the Nanboku-chō, Edo, Genroku, and Meji periods of Japan*. Click yōkai to reveal the words they hide. Click words to either: Fly to that word OR Teleport through that word (haiku word) Clicking a word can reveal a hidden yōkai. Hidden yōkai once revealed will create temporal distortions or present other obstacles that inhibit game play. As you complete more levels, they become more likely to show up, but the problems they create can be canceled out or mitigated with the right magic. Find all the words for all 14 haiku to win the game.

Haikuna has the feeling of a first-time game that hasn’t been playtested by anyone yet. It has a lot of interesting things to say with fun sound design, interesting poems, and a whole lot of heart. But it just doesn’t feel quite like it’s done. Between the unnecessary flashing lights and the weird directions, I have a feeling that if Haikuna has had playtesting, it’s not from people who play video games. Regardless, there is a lot of potential for a unique little educational indie game if it gets a little more work.
