Ignore the simplistic art, forget that Intrepid Izzy was originally developed for the SEGA Dreamcast, and you’ll be treated to the best Shantae game without Shantae in the title.

For me, Intrepid Izzy is a good retro-inspired title. Not all of its mechanics totally hit the mark, yet it still manages to pull off an experience that will keep you hooked through the adventure. The exploration can get a bit dull with tedious backtracking, and the brawling combat can feel tricky in places. But these shortcomings are made up thanks to the good pacing of the game and little surprises which will have you hooked to the very end. Intrepid Izzy is well worth sinking time into if you love your retro or just fancy a solid adventure.

You get about five or six hours of fun here, and while Intrepid Izzy may not keep pace visually I think it hangs well mechanically with similar games in the genre. It controls well, the suits add some fun gimmicks to play with, and the level designs are generally enjoyable to make your way through. The boss battles can be a little annoying, dragging on a little longer than needed, but combat is rather good overall. If you enjoy the Monster World or Shantae games, you might want to give this one a spin. SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5 New Releases Swordship ($19.99) A roguelite dodge-em-up where the best offense is a good defense.

Solid platforming and brilliant boss encounters more than make up for this Metroidvania's minor irritations. 3.5 Shantae's Sister Of all the consoles I thought I would be reviewing a Switch port for in 2022, Dreamcast, wasn’t one that instantly sprang to mind.

With its somewhat “Flash game” looks and middling platforming this isn’t a but game, but it’s also not very notable I’m positive that I’m far more jaded when it comes to evaluating games in over-saturated genres, but I do try to always keep perspective on the difference between games that I feel fall short of the mark that has been set by the competition and ones that are actually bad.
