Overview

Mutant Football League is a 7-on-7 arcade-style, fully 3D sports video game where creatures of all kinds take the field to battle it out in the most violent game ever played! This hilarious and brutal parody of professional American football will introduce you to some of the wildest, most bloodthirsty superstar players to ever strap on shoulder spikes. Players such as JJ. Rott and Troll Gonnamaulu lead stranglehold defenses against the punishing offenses of Tom Brainy, Jamaul Gnarls, and Ghoulio Bones. Mutant Football League features deep strategy, over-the-top violence, laugh-out-loud gross-out humor, and of course those signature Dirty Trick plays. Thirty monstrous teams are made up of skeletons, battlebots, trolls, aliens, super-humans, and demons. There are very few rules in The MFL, so get ready to do all the punching and crunching, biting and fighting, and stomping and chomping necessary to become the MVP (Most Vicious Player) of the Mayhem Bowl, and take home the Vic Lobotomi Trophy.

Mutant Football League is fast fun and easy for casual fans to get into. It's also incredibly violent and full of cheesy horror puns. In some ways it's everything I wanted it to be while simultaneously leaving the door open for improvements. My only gripes are that it's occasionally repetitive and can be frustratingly unpredictable (for those who hate huge game swings from dirty plays and being consumed by stadium hazards). Still, Mutant Football League is great fun!

Nit-picky things aside, you end up with a game that plays easier than Madden, is downright hilarious, and won’t break the bank to purchase. It really could use a full set of teams (then maybe some fake ones) and players that can speak English, but it doesn’t take long for the game to remind you why you are playing in the first place – to kick the snot out of your opponent by any means necessary. * The product in this article was sent to us by the developer/company. I am a graduate of West Liberty University with a B.S.

Mutant Football League really impressed me if you couldn’t tell. You know if you’ve read some of my previous reviews that I’m a big football fan, so I’m sure that plays a big role in this. I do think non-fans would have fun as well, just as arcade goers did in the late 90’s with NFL Blitz. Maybe it’s been too long since we have had anything other than Madden to please football fans, or maybe MFL is really just that good, either way I really like it and find myself going back to it over and over despite its vanilla modes at this point. Mutant Football League has character that I haven’t seen in a parody game in many years and look forward to what Digital Dreams has to come for the franchise.

Mutant Football League is a nice throwback to those games. The problems lie in that it feels sorely lacking in the presentation department. I would love to see it do well enough to improve upon the foundation, but for $20 it is hard not to recommend for fans that have nostalgia for those classic titles.

It successfully channels the spirit of its inspiration, it will please the niche audience that remembers it, and it’s impossible not to appreciate all the TLC that must have gone into its creation. Good strategy will win games and the playbook is not shallow, but it’s impossible not to love a game where victory can also be won by killing the opposing team’s best players. Disclosures: This game is developed and distributed by Digital Dreams Entertainment.

Mutant Football League is fast, dirty fun, and definitely one of my favorite sports games in recent years.

A retro revival given a modern coat of paint, Mutant Football League sticks to its 16-bit roots and showcases the funnier, gorier, side of American football. Like What You're Reading?
