Overview

For the more discerning and demanding game player Psygnosis brings you a refreshingly inventive game that will have you juggling your joystick and agonizing over its mind-muddling problems until the early hours of the morning. Nevermind features over 250 screens of stunning 3-D isometric graphics and arcade quality animated sprites. Each screen presents a different puzzle ranging in difficulty from the exceptionally easy to the mind-bogglingly difficult. Your task is to reconstruct a series of pictures by collecting scattered tiles and placing them in the right sequence. It's an apparently simple assignment on the surface, but don't be fooled. You will also have to cope with tile-pinching chess pieces, dissolving tiles and causeways, transporter tiles, and horrendously tight time limit. Nevermind is a unique combination of arcade action and mind numbing problem solving, and uses a clever blend of computer-generated and hand-crafted puzzles. Is your brain up to the most intriguing challenge of the decade? There is only one way to find out.

Overall the game is one of innovation, unique design and a brilliant concept. It can be disturbing, emotional and horrific, but always tries to be positive in its outcome. The gameplay puzzles can get tricky and the controls a bit muddy at times, and it’s definitely a game where its more exploration heavy and interaction light. This won’t be an experience for everyone, but if you’re unsure I would say to take the plunge into the subconscious, free your mind and take a risk with an original thoughtful intelligent game.

Although Nevermind might have been an eye-opening experience the first play through, the gameplay became rather stale quickly. Experiencing the memories of the patients through a first person experience might be great for VR, but on the Xbox One it neither hinders nor helps the experience. Nevermind has a great story that will make you feel for your patients and want to help them with their problems.

Nevermind is a game unlike any I have ever played before and one that is worth experiencing. I would have preferred it to be much scarier than it is, perhaps turning to cult classic Eternal Darkness for inspiration. Once you complete the five missions there isn’t much incentive to collect all the memories, aside from achievements/trophies. The game is also a bit pricey at $19.99 USD, which may turn some off. Even though I didn’t get scared, I never knew what to expect when probing the mind of the next patient. If you are up for trying something new and have some extra cash, Nevermind will definitely get you thinking.

What’s lacking is an overall narrative. You simply help one patient after another, but there’s no overarching storyline aside from getting a thank you note once you’ve helped them via your neuroprobing. You don’t even see anyone in your facility, making the setting feel a little too sterile at times. If you can deal with its' obvious flaws, obtuse puzzles, and lack of meaty ‘gameplay’, Nevermind is truly a unique title worth checking out if you want to see some astonishing imagery, some of which there is a good chance that you've never seen anything like it.

The stories being told felt sincere and deal with issues you just don’t find in games; especially the fourth patient, a trans-gendered individual in a physically abusive relationship. What hurts this experience is the actual puzzles, which make up the bulk of the gameplay. I just wish more effort was put into developing more meaningful puzzles that were designed to be more intuitive and actually fun to solve.
