Overview

Orbital Gear is a sidescroller shooter where you utilize the gravitation of celestial objects to give your mech momentum through space. Arm your Mech with two of twelve different weapons and destroy your enemies. Orbital Gear features classic multiplayer gameplay with new mechanics and 3D graphics. Orbital Gear has classic deathmatch as the basis for multiplayer pandemonium but it also have a special game mode called Orbital Warfare, a mode where you battle the opposing team with the goal to destroy the opponents base. Victory is ensured either with your mechs weapons or by charging your doomsday weapon with energy cores, collected from fallen enemies.

While the problematic menus and glaring lack of single-player content invariably creeps in, tarnishing what is otherwise an essential title, Orbital Gear remains a refreshing and deftly executed take on multiplayer gaming that more developers should consider. Top Game Moment: Skating across the surface of a planet, backflipping away from it and getting sucked in by the gravitational pull of another whilst returning fire to an attacking opponent. First things first; Orbital Gear is an exclusively multi-player experience where players hop into mechs, choose a pair of weapons and a gadget and then proceed to blast the stuffing out of each other until one of them racks up the requisite number of points to win.

There’s a solid foundation to Orbital Gear. The momentum-based aerial acrobatics are fluid, and mastering them is rewarding. The weapons are varied, and it’s interesting how they interact with the game world. It’s disappointing then, as the delay they have in firing is at odds with the one-to-one ease of movement the game is built around.

Orbital Gear can be a frantic shooter that pulls you in with its gravitational gimmickry, but lacks the forward momentum to keep me playing for long. It makes the mistake of giving you all the weapons up front, leaving you with nothing to work for.

I know games like this take a lot of work from creators with a very small budget, but sometimes, an idea just isn’t that great.

Side-scrolling combat games aren't new, and plenty of them are heftier, more substantial and cheaper than this one. Steam users can do better. Disclosures: This game was obtained via publisher and reviewed on the PC.
