Overview

Sequel to the acclaimed Portal (2007), Portal 2 pits the protagonist of the original game, Chell, and her new robot friend, Wheatley, against more puzzles conceived by GLaDOS, an A.I. with the sole purpose of testing the Portal Gun's mechanics and taking revenge on Chell for the events of Portal. As a result of several interactions and revelations, Chell once again pushes to escape Aperture Science Labs.

So do we need Portal 2? Do I need it? Maybe not, but I'm sure as hell glad it exists. The portal aspect has probably reached its zenith in Portal 2, and given the way the game ends I don't think there's much room for a Portal 3. Indeed, I would say it's time for portals to branch their physics-defying awesomeness into other genres.

With this sequel, Valve has ramped up the brain-cramping puzzle elements and expanded the cast with immensely lovable characters, and they did it just enough to make sure the whole thing feels fresh and interesting for the longer campaign. I think it's very likely that you'll come away with a huge smile on your face once you're done.

In conclusion, Portal 2 is a textbook example of how to make a great game, but nothing more. Its narrative focus robs the game of its predecessor’s quirky charm, but gives players a much stronger sense of purpose – medium-term objectives roll by at a steady pace, like Half-Life 2 without the boring bits – and there is still plenty of scope in discussing the psycho-sexual imagery of splattering a level with gel.
