CRITIK
"Recettear is an item-shop-focused role-playing game. That means that the core gameplay revolves around running your item store. You will find or purchase items, sell them to townsfolk, and manage your store with an eye toward repaying a debt each week. The game is beaten when the debt is completely repaid."

To say that Recettear came out of nowhere and completely blindsided me, in a good way, is an understatement, and others who've played the game feel the same as I do. When I was at work, I counted down the hours till I could come home and play Recettear.

I came into Recettear expecting a simple sim game with some spoofy self-aware humor, but it's so much more than that. The sheer amount of depth is staggering, and the game is extremely good at throwing the player something new every now and then to keep things feeling fresh. Were it not for some perplexing design and pacing decisions I'd be putting this on my all-time favorites shelf, but I guess being, really, really good will have to do. Disclosures: This game was obtained via Steam and reviewed on the PC.

One of Steam's best kept secrets and a cracking indie title that both pokes fun at and celebrates the charming absurdity of role-playing games. Pros: A great idea carried off to perfection, with some of the best dialogue of the year and buckets of charm.

Recettear is perhaps one of the most unusual examples of a simulation game yet; with its engaging storyline, large ensemble of characters and action-RPG sequences, this is a game that really stands out from the crowd.
