Rise of the Ronin impresses with its rich historical backdrop and character bonds system, drawing praise for its ambitious narrative from some critics. However, others criticize its predictable plot twists, underdeveloped characters, and lack of impactful choices. While some appreciate its immersive setting, others find the storytelling lacking depth and engagement, resulting in mixed reviews overall.

The Story of Rise of the Ronin has garnered praise from critics for its rich historical setting, offering an immersive experience that delves into the cultural and political landscape of 19th-century Japan. Critics like Areajugones and CGMagazine appreciate the game's intricate narrative, with CGMagazine drawing parallels to RPG classics like Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The inclusion of historical figures and the character bonds system, as noted by COGconnected, adds depth to the storytelling, creating a world that feels grounded in reality while still allowing for fantastical elements. On the flip side, some critics, such as But Why Tho? and Digital Trends, express disappointment in the execution of the narrative. But Why Tho? criticizes the writing for not fully supporting the heavy and intricate storyline, highlighting the lack of consequences for decisions and the illusion of choice. Similarly, Digital Trends points out predictable plot twists, underdeveloped central characters, and an overall lack of impact from the branching story paths. This sentiment is echoed by critics like Push Square, who find the narrative uninteresting and lacking engagement despite relying on historical figures. Overall, the consensus among critics regarding the Story of Rise of the Ronin is mixed. While some reviewers appreciate the game's ambitious narrative and character development, others feel that it falls short in delivering a truly engaging and impactful storytelling experience. Critics like GameStar and GGRecon commend the game for offering engaging choices and character interactions, while Variety and Worth Playing criticize the disjointed plot and lack of fleshed-out character bonds. The game seems to excel in capturing the historical essence of Japan's Bakumatsu period but struggles to fully immerse players in a cohesive and emotionally resonant narrative, as noted by IGN Portugal and Eurogamer Poland. Ultimately, Rise of the Ronin appears to be a title that offers a unique blend of history and fiction but may leave some players wanting more in terms of narrative depth and execution.
