Road to Guangdong is a decent game IF you’re just driving around listening to the music. Getting the parts needed to get the car running, and keep it running is where the game falls just short. Decent enough to warrant a buy, for sure.

Road to Guangdong is a brilliant narrative about the importance of communicating with one’s family wrapped up in a road trip simulator. A title that deserves to stand outside of Jalopy’s shadow and squarely on its own strong foundation, Road to Guangdong will likely land within the top 10 games I’ve played in 2020 for its soulful narrative, peaceful gameplay, and surprising need for clever strategy.

A game of two halves, there’s just about enough in one half to make up for the frustrations of the other. Easily an afternoon’s enjoyment in there. 6/10 Road to Guangdong is launching on Xbox One (review platform), PS4 and Nintendo Switch on August 28th, 2020.

Road to Guangdong is an interesting experiment in the very niche road trip simulator category that's ultimately worth a look because of its bold form of storytelling and interesting, captivating characters. The fact that its flaws are so persistently visible throughout most of it means that it won't be a game for everyone, but for someone looking for a unique, imperfect experience, this might be just the game they're looking for. Still, in another world where different developmental choices were made, Road to Guangdong could have been the indie masterpiece it's so often striving to be. Next: The Alto Collection Review: Some Charm Left Behind Road to Guangdong releases August 28 on Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.
