CRITIK
Rolling Hills is a life sim about opening your own sushi restaurant in a cozy village. Assume the “roll” of a budding sushi chef as you work to improve the lives of your neighbors and make new friends. With any luck, you’ll attract some new neighbors along the way, too!

Rolling Hills: Make Sushi, Make Friends is as satisfying as great sushi. You’ll have fun running a restaurant and making friends at a nice pace with very little to stop you.

Rolling Hills: Make Sushi, Make Friends is a delightful experience that’ll keep players hooked in with its simple yet satisfying gameplay loop. It’s always a lot of fun to run your restaurant and serve your customers, whilst customising its look, unlocking new goodies, or simply interacting with your fellow townsfolk all adds to the charm. Sure, it can be guilty of being a bit too simple in places, but with a satisfying sense of progress that makes it perfect for quick sessions here and there, Rolling Hills: Make Sushi, Make Friends manages to stand out as a cozy life-sim treat.

Rolling Hills: Make Sushi, Make Friends is a game for a very specific kind of cozy and management game fan. While some might find the gameplay simple and challenge lacking, I enjoyed dipping into Rolling Hills: Make Sushi, Make Friends as a break from other games, and it feels right at home on Steam Deck with solid performance. There's a charming art style and wholesomeness to Rolling Hills that's immediately captivating, and we've been pretty surprised by the level of depth that it provides - it's still a simple game, but the ability to explore beyond the confines of the restaurant was something we hadn't expected, and various aspects of the gameplay continue to evolve over time as well. The loop of serving customers, buying new ingredients and decorating your restaurant is an addictive one, and it's all backed up by a superb soundtrack that's become firmly stuck in our heads. Of course, this all relies on you enjoying the repetitive loop that Rolling Hills offers, and if you don't...

If you’re looking for a management style game – time, financial, etc. – you won’t find it here. This is more of a game about collecting things – sushi recipes and ingredients, décor for your shop, hats for your bot, … – and interacting with a quirky cast of locals. Animal Crossing fans will certainly enjoy their time with the game, although the number of things you can do and collect here pales in comparison. Rolling Hills oozes charm, though, and even though your time in town might be relatively short, it will definitely be cozy and relaxing. Final Rating: 78% - Run a restaurant without the fear of failure. Note: A review code for Rolling Hills: Make Sushi, Make Friends was provided by the publisher.

There’s magic in Rolling Hills for sure. But it’s a very fleeting magic, and a little more sauce would have made it a much more impactful source of wonder. It was definitely cute, though! Rolling Hills: Make Sushi, Make Friends is available for PC, Xbox One and Series X|S.
