Overview

Sublevel Zero Redux is a first-person roguelike six-degree-of-freedom shooter set in a universe where reality is falling apart. Take control of a lone gunship pilot whose mission is to loot and craft ancient technology. Descend into a vast underground facility, fighting through procedurally generated zero gravity environments to recover the technology you and your clan need to survive. Inspired by classics such as 1996’s Descent and 1998’s Forsaken, Sublevel Zero Redux is the first classic 6DoF shooter on console in over a decade. Sigtrap have remastered, extended and improved their debut PC title Sublevel Zero to create Redux. New enemies, difficulty options and unlockable content make Redux the definitive version of the game.

The use of the gyroscope is, as we mentioned, a hit and miss operation and while I found the combat fun, it was also difficult enough that I took several runs before I got good. This learning curve coupled with the permadeath aspect of the roguelike qualities makes Sublevel Zero Redux the type of game to pick up if you know you either want a challenge or remember the ridiculous difficulty of end game Descent with glee.Sublevelzero Redux is out now on Nintendo Switch and available on the Nintendo eShop.

If you have some nostalgia for classics like Forsaken or Descent you’re going find a lot to enjoy here in Sublevel Zero Redux and if you’re new to this type of gameplay experience, well, this is a great place to jump in too. Pleasing on the eyes and ears and featuring smooth gameplay that deftly balances relaxing exploration and intense combat, Sublevel Zero Redux will keep you up late at night as you continuously say to yourself… “Just one more try”.

Whether you happened to cross paths with this odd little genre during its brief popularity or Sublevel Zero Redux will be your first dizzying journey, you’re in for a great blend of retro game design with a twist of modern mechanics. While I do wish the art and mechanics worked a little better together now and then, it doesn’t hamper the addictive gameplay to any significant degree. Grab some motion sickness medicine and get ready to spin and shoot.
