The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing II

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 2 may not be as polished as other heavy-hitters in the genre when it comes to production value and the streamlining of its systems, but it has a lot of soul and it's not afraid to show it. In addition to this, Neocore Games was brave enough to experiment with new mechanics and to expand the genre, even adding features that might seem redundant, just for the sake of allowing you to mix and match a ton of options in order to get the perfect balance that fits your particular play style the best. I liked the first game a great deal, and the second one managed to surprise me, delivering more of the same enjoyable and amusing kind of writing, a much deeper and engaging combat experience, and a level of complexity that seems baffling at first. Looking at all those new abilities, way down on the skill tree, feels like a combination between the excitement of Christmas and the thrilling vertigo of standing on a mountain peak and staring at the world beneath you. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing 2 managed to capture all that was good about its predecessor and somehow make it even better, while also expanding everything and adding a ton of new interesting content and mechanics.

Van Helsing II eclipses its predecessor in almost every way. Where the original game depended on fast, action-packed combat to entertain the player, Van Helsing II is a much more refined game and successfully leans onto a better story.

This feels like a complete experience, one that is a natural and smart evolution of the first game's mechanics. The fact that it has incredible value with a very modest price tag only helps that fact.

Neocore hasn’t strayed too far from what made the first game so amazing, but it has managed to add a layer of refinement by improving the some of the game mechanics, UI and visuals. While the tower defense mode did grow a bit tiresome at times, I had a lot of fun playing and the newly added features are a welcome change.

For all intents and purposes, Van Helsing II is more of the same. It just so happens that “same” is really, really good. Action RPG players should not pass this game up, and dungeon crawling fans looking for a satisfying loot and stat game need look no further.
