Whateverland is a simple point-and-click adventure that is just fun; though the complexity might be a bit bothersome for others, I found it a charming and enjoyable aspect.

With its dark humour, goth-like art style, and gloomy location. Whateverland is a great reminder of just how hard it is to design point-and-click games. The amount of care and detail seen everywhere you look; all of the hand-drawn details did not go unnoticed. I find it hard to think that Caligari Games weren’t at least partially inspired by Tim Burton, Edgar Allan Poe, and Shakespeare. Perhaps even Vincent Prince in the character's names and designs as you move around the world and listen to the dialogue. While not the smoothest point-and-click game I’ve played, I enjoyed my time with it, and its tone and unique design were enough to keep me interested to play through twice. It would be a great game to check out during the October spooky season.

While there have been quite a number of solid retro point-and-click adventures on Switch, none have quite had this flavor to them Since there are an abundance of classic point-and-click inspired adventures out there on the eShop, the pressure is on to do what it takes to stand out.

Idiosyncratic, compelling and creative, Whateverland is a one trip this stranger in strange land would heartily recommend. 3.8 Stranger in a Strange Land Whateverland is a decidedly French point-and-click adventure (Yes, I know the devs are Russian), bursting with charm, that is bound to relieve your sense of endless ennui, if only for a few hours. Players take on the role of Vincent, a career criminal that gets sucked into the strange purgatorial Whateverland after unwittingly attempting to steal a diamond from an ancient and powerful witch called Beatrice, who banishes Vincent to a realm of her own creation inhabited by the unfortunate souls that have wronged her in some way. To leave Whateverland, Vincent needs to collect seven items to cast a spell to summon Beatrice and hopefully convince her to let him go.

Whateverland is an enjoyable point-and-click style adventure game that plays as well on Switch as anything designed around a mouse interface could. It’s not too difficult, though some of its many mini-games can be irritating. The setting and bizarre cast of characters are what carries this quest by and large, along with a strong, distinctive presentation. The two routes offer genuine replay value, though neither one feels like it reaches its full potential. Worth a pick-up for adventure game fans, and if you like the premise you’ll likely enjoy how it delivers on it. SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5 New Releases Bilkins’ Folly ($19.99) In this adventure game, you play as a treasure hunter named Percy Bilkins who is trying to find his lost mother and father.

I am really happy that I stepped outside of my comfort zone and tried out this title. It has a lot of charm and I can openly admit that by the end of my playthrough, I was a fan of the protagonist, the cast, and even the villain a little bit. It’s obvious that Whateverland has a story it wants to tell and it leaves it up to you how you want to go about that experience. I won’t lie and say everything about it is perfect.
