A Summer with the Shiba Inu
The demo of a free to play visual novel set in a world populated with dogs. You play as a Shiba Inu called Syd who comes back to her home Shiba Island after being gone for more than ten years. She meets old friends and new challenges. Features: - Included dog bark button in preference menu - Random facts about dogs in menus - Some other stuff where the game will notice how long you take to make a decision - Dogs galore!

Visual novels… Two words that made me turn my head almost every time I hear about a new game. Since that genre recently gets more attention and love outside of Japan, I’m watching my backlog grow by the minute probably. A Summer with the Shiba Inu stood out to me, though. First, the title was nothing you come across very often.

A Summer with the Shiba Inu has an intriguing premise with a curious story. However, because of the engine limitations and limited nature of presentation and choices, it might only appeal to those who want a short visual novel with an interesting hook.

Overall, I found A Summer With The Shiba Inu a flawed game. Not worth the $10 asking price, maybe a $7 at the most. There were many times where I thought “this can be better, that can be better”, while getting vibes from other VNs I’ve played and enjoyed, both indie and AAA, and thinking about how this game could improve by learning from such titles. Shiba Inu has the right ideas in many ways and I want to see this concept returned to by the team after they gain more experience. I know I’m not one to talk as I’m far below every skill level that goes into creating a game.

Summer with the Shiba Inu is a pretty unimpressive Visual Novel, with an uninteresting story, poor presentation, and an unsatisfying payoff with little in terms of drastic choices that made me feel as if I wasted my hour with the original route I took. When a visual novel feels like it’s filled with filler and uninteresting events without much of a hook, and doesn’t properly explain some things, it just falls apart like paper at the end of the day, and unfortunately, that’s how Summer felt for me. Add to the fact that a game of such low quality like this is being priced for an outrageous $10, and I unfortunately feel that this is one of the weakest Visual Novels I’ve ever played, and I can’t even recommend you play it out of curiosity.
