American Conquest: Fight Back

Overview

Three centuries of war continue with frantic combat and desperate power struggles raging across the American continent. The Spanish press the attack in the Yucatan against the fierce Maya and Aztec nations. The Germans put all their efforts into finding the legendary El Dorado. The Pontiac Uprising ends in a terrifying bloodbath between Native Americans and the British. And the Russians will do anything to conquer Alaska at the cost of the Haida. Lead armies of thousands of troops to victory in large-scale battles in 10 missions. Both games are a real treat for any strategy fan. But this is not a standard RTS, there is no simple build-send-and-forget here because even the biggest army can be defeated by a well coordinated, but relatively small force. Just like the old proverb says: “An army of sheep led by a lion would defeat an army of lions led by a sheep.”

This brings me to my main complaint about the game: the ridiculous level of difficulty. Even on easy mode, the CPU will trounce you, and there's almost nothing you can do about it. This is due, in part, to the highly aggressive AI, but it's mostly the game's weak interface and awkward gameplay mechanics that hinder you. It would make sense to move your musketeers out in front of your melee units, to take shots at oncoming armies, for instance, but in order to do this, you must first manually select your ranged units, move them to the front lines, tell them to stand their ground, order them to hold their fire, wait for the enemy to come into range before giving the open fire order, then move them to the rear, then select the melee units and move them in to engage the now-weakened enemy.
