Overview

Armello is a grand swashbuckling adventure that combines three styles of play; The deep tactics of card games with the rich strategy of table top board games, combined with a character role-playing system. As a hero from one of the clans of Armello, you'll quest, scheme, hire agents, explore, vanquish monsters, cast spells and face off against other players, with one ultimate end goal in mind — storming the palace and becoming King or Queen of Armello. The Kingdom of Armello is as dangerous as it is beautiful, perils, banes and bandits hide around every corner and a spreading corruption known as the rot is leaving no creature untouched. Armello is League of Geeks’ attempt to revolutionise digital board and card games, whilst providing players a rich world within which they can craft their own stories of epic adventure. The aim was to create a rich game full of backstabbing, close shaves, shattered alliances, ruses and empty promises - a perfect game to play with your friends.

Despite a few matchmaking glitches and standard multiplayer connection issues, Armello is a fun, tactical, fantasy board game that should be played by all strategy fans. The game will make you ally with, or betray, your friends and family as you work to win the throne of Armello and restore order to the land. Will you control through violence, peace, espionage and deceit, or through winning favor with the king? The choice is up to you as you forge your own path through the fantasy world of Armello.

With so much to offer and such a great presentation, it’s hard for me not to consider Armello a must-buy for anyone with even a passing interest in digital board games or innovative RPGs. Deep gameplay and a wide variety of characters, victory conditions, and more, there’s a ton to dive into that’s all wrapped in a gorgeous package. While the $19.99 price on Steam may seem steep, it’s more than fair for the detail that’s gone into it.

Armello really does a very good job of blending board game mechanics with video game technology to create a fun experience that should appeal to fans of both. The AI could certainly use some tweaking, and this is a problem that is more pronounced at the moment due to the somewhat limited player base that is currently out there.

It’s taken three years to get here, but the long journey hasn’t dulled Armello’s blades. From the deep tactics of its living board game gameplay to the sheer charm of its world-building and character designs, it's a turn-based quest filled with back-stabbing, political power plays and rampaging monsters that’s different each and every time you play. It’s at its absolute best when played in multiplayer, that human factor making for an even more predictable battle for the corrupted throne. You’d be doing yourself a disservice not to add this anthropomorphic tale to your wish list.

Even with these small complaints, I feel Armello is an amazing game. I have already found several hours of enjoyment as it really has no end. Every time I played it was a new game with a new outcome. Even as I write this review I am excited about jumping in and playing a few more rounds before bed. Armello truly captured the fun of the table-top genre and offered a worthwhile package on Xbox One.
