Over the past five years or so, Konami has become a standard-bearer in preserving and presenting video game history. There have been bumps along the road of course, but Castlevania Dominus Collection is not just a set of ROMs grouped together that benefits from comprising all-time greats. While those games are still obviously the main attraction, the amount of effort put into making these games look and play great, then supplementing them with absurdly high quality materials (including deep cuts even a degenerate like myself was shocked to see) is revitalizing.

The value gamers get in the Castlevania Dominus Collection is unbeatable, and each title included offers something unique. Whether it is Dawn of Sorrow‘s touchscreen gimmicks, Portrait of Ruin‘s tag-teaming, or the savage difficulty of Order of Ecclesia, you can expect to have a grand time with any of them. They’re masterworks all, you can’t go wrong. Castlevania Dominus Collection was reviewed on a PlayStation 5 using a code provided by Konami.

Bringing some of the finest 2D games to date, the Castlevania Dominus Collection is a brilliant compilation that is helped even further with the surprise inclusion of a much needed rework of the game that started it all. The DS-era Castlevania games were unfortunately maligned by part of the audience at the time because of the oversaturation of games in that style then, but it’s undeniable that they were the last great inclusions in the long-running Konami series.

Following in the footsteps of the Castlevania Advance Collection, the Castlevania Dominus Collection continues the precedent of being a must-play, masterful collection. The three main DS games included here are all exceptional action RPG experiences with lite metroidvania components that make progression and exploration increasingly fulfilling. Moreover, the inclusion of Haunted Castle and its impressive remake, alongside the numerous customizable options, extra features, and strong handheld and docked performance, only add to the positives this package boasts. Castlevania Dominus Collection (Switch) The Castlevania Dominus Collection continues to illustrate why this franchise is so beloved thanks to a compilation of some truly excellent action RPG experiences from the DS that have been translated elegantly and meticulously. Additionally, the inclusion of a neglected arcade entry as well as a full remake is perfect for preservation and amassing newer fans.

With gorgeous pixel graphics, weapon builds to learn, and enemy designs that continually delight, plus some excellent maps to explore and uncover, this is a fantastic little collection that should please any Metroidvania fan. That each adventure is a little more digestible compared to 25-hour epics from recent times is an added bonus.

Overall, the Castlevania Dominus Collection is an easy recommendation as it compiles three fine entries in this legendary series. While they aren’t exactly new entries, experiencing Order of Ecclesia, Portrait of Ruin, and Dawn of Sorrow in modern consoles with fantastic upgrades is an offer we would never refuse.
