Earthlock: Festival of Magic from Snowcastle Games is an absolute nostalgic joy to play. Feeling at once both reverential for classic 16-bit JRPGs and novel due to its western stylized setting and systems, Earthlock is a grand start to an RPG trilogy, and well worth the meager price of admission. Read on for our full review. In development for nearly five years, and successfully kickstarted by Snowcastle a few years back, Earthlock: Festival of Magic is one of three planned chapters of the Earthlock trilogy.

Ultimately, what makes Earthlock so essential is just how earnest it is in its love for classic JRPGs. It’s worth sitting through its more cumbersome features in order to appreciate the hard work that a team of people who clearly love the genre have sweated over to refine the game to the point where it’s not only a homage to the greats of old, but it adds just a little to what makes the genre so wonderful.

Whilst the art style here verges on the cartoonish, the gorgeous sense of colour and texture really brings the world alive. What’s more, whilst some of the creatures are evidently designed to induce the cute factor (a trope of many Japanese games) the dialogue is often witty and sharp, which makes it accessible for adults.

This homage to the seminal days of RPGs is quite successful at what it set out to do. The strong points include character advancement, the village, and enemy variety, while I was let down by a slow plot and inconvenient save system. The Xbox One isn't exactly a haven for this genre, but in nostalgia value alone it's a welcome treat. Earthlock: Festival of Magic is a solid attempt at making retro RPGs fun again. Although it's not as engaging as similar titles from the turn of the century, fans of the genre will enjoy the time that they spend adventuring with Amon and his ragtag group of chums.

In the end, while the story is regrettably un-memorable and fairly lacking, the game play makes up for it with several clever, strategic spins on time-tested game play mechanics. Back that up with solid graphics and audio and you have yourself an old-school RPG that should scratch that itch you've been having.
