Overall, Fast & Furious: Crossroads is a fabulous celebration of the sloppy, sometimes-inexplicable dumbness, sometimes-inspired madness of the films it shares a name with, and I loved every minute of it. Disclosures: This game is developed by Slightly Mad Studios and published by Namco Bandai.

That's why I mostly love Fast & Furious Crossroads. I do think there's something questionable about it being a full-price release, and I do think the engaging multiplayer content (which I'll detail in a separate feature) will likely die on the vine thanks to that. But what's here is a sumptuous feast for franchise fans and adrenaline junkies alike - more than enough to whet your appetite for next year's F9. While sixty bucks might be a big ask for most, anybody who's longed for a return to dumb mid-aughts car games, or anyone who broke down into heaving sobs at the end of Furious 7, will likely get their money's worth from this one. Plus, you get to play as Michelle Rodriguez.

Fails to meet minimum standards delivers a cheapened frustrating experience that is only tolerable in finite quantities. 2.5 Disappointing Picture the scene, fast cars that you will never ever drive or own, racing down a long winding coastal road; and in hot pursuit of a really, really bad guy. … … Oh wait, just watch this: This game opens like a blockbuster movie of its name sake; derivative of the storylines of its name sake, and other similar titles, but with even more game-player road carnage than should be possible. The most notable calling-card for this game is the participation of some A-list actors, most notably Vin Diesel and Sonequa Martin-Green among others. The campaign story-line of this game has you getting involved in the darker underworld after you totally swore you were done with it, yet somehow you managed to get dragged into it because of a bad debt and the threat of the mob, one thing leads to another and you are enlisted into hunting down a major terrorist.

Many of us lived through the era of video games that was overflowing with bad movie-to-game adaptations, and Crossroads is a pointed reminder of those days, showing just how far games have come since then. It’s a mess of a game that hones in on why the Fast movies are great, but will make you want to put the controller down to watch one of those movies instead.

Fast & Furious Crossroads is yet another uninspired licensed game with lousy driving mechanics, dated graphics and a short, forgettable story. The few unique ideas Slightly Mad Studios does bring to the table, like the ability to easily switch between multiple drivers with unique gadgets and an original multiplayer experience, are bogged down by too many boring missions and droll writing that saps away at most of the opportunities for anything resembling excitement.

Fast & Furious Crossroads brings nothing meaningful to the franchise or racing games in general. At full price, you should absolutely stay away even if you are a diehard veteran of the series. Horrible voice acting, dated visuals, weak sound effects, no customization, and cumbersome controls all contribute to a lifeless slog. There are a few short-lived moments of success, but they aren’t worth putting up with a game where you never feel like more than a co-pilot. Hopefully in the future, Fast & Furious will know when to stay in its lane. Score: 4.0 / 10 Easy Allies Reviews are made possible by generous viewers just like you.
