I came to this series knowing not what lay ahead. Imagine my surprise when I found a beautifully crafted fantasy realm that reminded me both of the Disciples series and the more recent Warcraft III. The turn based movements and use of heroes to form armies seemed to be pulled almost directly from Disciples, but the style of the lands and the world in which you travel in are very much Warcraftian in their design and yet they held their own sense of style and flair. In HOMMV you can build soaring buildings in the cities that you capture.

Like the gameplay, the story also picks up, mainly because of an ingenious structure in which it is told not from the perspective of one hero but from the points of view of consecutive protagonists. The demon who waylays Queen Isabel in the first section of the game later becomes the protagonist you lead on a rampage through elven lands. Still, the story is a minuscule part of the overall experience, an occasional conversation dropped in between vast chunks of gameplay that can easily suck up 80 hours or more of your life. Boiled down to its essentials, Heroes is a game about exploring territory and building an army.
