That being said, the game is overall very solid. It’s easy to learn, difficult to master, and filled to the brim with smart puzzles for anyone who loves a good who done it story. If you like trying to solve the murder before the end of a mystery book or try to pick out the culprit before the TV show or movie ends, you’ll dig this game in spite of its eccentricities.

Murder Mystery Machine is a thought-provoking puzzle game that requires you to think outside of the box if you wish to obtain the best grade. Rather than having you solve the crimes committed by simply talking to and arresting the suspects, you must piece together the who, why, where, and how through the use of the initiative crime board mechanic. However, in order to get the best result, you must leave no stone left unturned and ensure you link every possible clue and conclusion to the correct reason and motive – which is very hard, even for veteran puzzle gamers. It delivers an interesting story over eight cases, full of suspects, clues, red herrings, beautiful dioramas, and victims, but can a rookie solve one of the biggest cases of her career? If you like mystery puzzle games that require you to think about everything rather than having it handed to you on a plate, then Murder Mystery Machine is for you.

Murder Mystery Machine is a solid whodunit with an engaging storyline and a campaign that puts you in charge of solving 8 interconnected cases. Having said that, it's ultimately quite linear which makes the gameplay feel a little inconsequential at times.

Murder Mystery Machine utilizes a fun detective mechanic that makes you really feel like you’re connecting the dots, but there are a few technical issues that brought down the experience ever so slightly. With that being said, it’s one of the few detective games that actually feels like you’re piecing the puzzle together instead of being lead to the correct answer, so be sure to get your brain ready for some extreme teasing. If you love murder mysteries and want a fascinating story with a lot more going on underneath than initially meets the eye, booting up Murder Mystery Machine is a no-brainer.

The fact I had a lot of fun with Murder Mystery Machine despite its myriad of issues is a testament to how strong its gameplay loop and core concept are. I loved solving these murder mysteries even though I was constantly struggling with the game’s controls, as well as asking myself the reasoning behind the lack of touchscreen support on a Switch port of a former Apple Arcade exclusive.

Murder Mystery Machine has its flaws, but it's packed full of content that should please puzzle fans, especially those who have a fascination with crime shows. While the outcome of individual cases may be easy to guess, the player still needs to back up their opinion with proof, adding an extra small challenge as it forces the player to think on a more detailed scale. Additionally, while the smaller cases may be predictable at times, the larger story heads in a direction that is entirely unexpected, tying together Murder Mystery Machine and making it surprisingly engaging as a result. Murder Mystery Machine is available now on PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
