Overview

Neverout is a game like no other. It takes huge inspiration from the most classic 'Escape Room' in history. The game features reality bending, quantum physics, traps, obstacles and puzzles. All soaked in otherworldly and surreal setting. The players will test their imagination, sense of logic, 'out-of-the-box' thinking and how quick and swift they can adapt to ever-changing reality. 'Up' can become 'down', 'floor' - 'ceiling'. Fire might freeze and ice start burning. But there's always logic behind the madness and one thing is certain - there is always a solution. But some... Come with sacrifices.

Neverout is a well thought out and tricky puzzle game which is playable in both VR and Flat mode. With a similar concept to Cube, the film from 1997, each new ‘room’ you fall into offers a new challenge which you must overcome in order to progress further and get out of this prison! It offers a decent challenge and some of the puzzles are rather cryptic which may take you a while to work out the solutions for. Puzzle fans will love the challenge and casuals will enjoy the experience, especially if you don your VR headset and play it fully immersed within the 6×6 grid-based environments. Either way, Neverout is certainly one to pick up if you like your puzzles!

I suppose it says a lot about a game if the biggest thing I’m complaining about is the short length. I hope Neverout gets extra puzzles or a sequel down the line because it really is fun to play. Plus, a sequel might give the game some longevity. Beyond replaying to collect trophies (though to be honest, you’d have to work hard not to get them all on the first playthrough) and taking advantage of the game’s PlayStation VR support, Neverout is more than its surface level homage to a really great movie. I really liked Neverout because it offers the right level of the challenge and atmosphere to keep you engaged all the way through to the end.

While most of us would be content with four walls and a roof, what if you were trapped inside six walls with a hatch that only led to another box with six walls? While the former lends to a sense of peace and protection the other creates a prison and when one set continuously leads to another it imbues a sense of dread and despair as you feel like you've never get out. Neverout is a puzzler that has you literally stuck inside of a series of cubes attempting to find your way out.

Overall, Neverout is an interesting VR title turned into a Nintendo Switch experience that seems to be better suited to handle it. It’s fun, it’s challenging, and it can be a bit frustrating now and then, but it’s still worth checking out, especially at the price point.

As it is, Neverout is probably the best movie tie-in game to a movie that few are probably aware of, which is not saying much. Neverout is a pleasant diversion in VR but one that only scratches the surface of its potential.

Neverout takes a simple premise and packs it into a small package. With just a few hours of playtime, it doesn’t outstay its welcome, but there’s not much variation to the puzzles and it could have done with a story. Puzzle fiends should definitely take a look, especially if they own a VR headset.

Despite the lack of a story it’s still hard to not recommend it. It’s a more immersive experience if you play it in PlayStation VR but if you don’t own one it’s worth playing on the TV as well. If you’ve got a few dollars and are in the mood for something new to test your brain with give Neverout a shot. *Neverout is out now on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR.
