Overview

"Night Call is a new kind of non linear narrative and noire game taking place in Paris, France. Using the real city map (~105 km² or ~40.5 mi²) and the intimacy a taxi can offer, players will meet numerous and unique passengers to talk with. Some of them know things about the killer, others pretend to know things, and some just need to talk to someone. More than just telling a story, Night Call also aims to show the city of Paris like it is in reality. A bit far from the usual cliché of the city of love. A gigantic city, always in movement, and full of very different people. Every one of them has a story to share. Put together, all these bits of stories will create a unique experience on the way to find the killer's identity."

This one’s pretty niche. If you need action and accomplishment, give it a pass. If you like atmosphere, dialogue trees, and sometimes running into cats that tip well, you will enjoy.

Night Call is an exceptional game with very few flaws. Although minimal in its playful and technical system, the narrative potential and unique atmosphere it presents are elements of unquestionable quality. Reaching the typical sensations of the greatest founders of noir.

Night Call’s real strength is in the stories it tells about Paris, about the people who live there and the meaningful connections you can have with them no matter how brief or unexpected. It's these people you'll remember once you've solved each case, not the fares you charged them.

Although relatively simple in its approach and execution, Night Call is a brilliant, stylish, and deeply intriguing example of how a narrative investigation game should be delivered on the Nintendo Switch.

Night Call is an original take on the narrative-driven investigation genre, playing almost like a visual novel with lots of choices. Also, no two playthroughs will be the same thanks to the abundance of passengers which you can interact with and the evidence you’ll collect to help you come to your final conclusion. Despite my issues with the case board (mainly revolving around how confusing, unintuitive, and not very user-friendly it is), I still thoroughly enjoyed talking to the passengers, learning more about the case, investigating the suspects, and coming to my own conclusions around who I think is the serial killer. This is a game which makes you think without giving you the answer on a plate – certainly a recommendation from me for the passenger interactions alone! Night Call is out now on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC.

There really should be more games like Night Call out there. It tries something unique and succeeds at it, delivering compelling short stories through a limited yet meaningful interaction and wrapped up in a classy aesthetic. The game shows humanism and wisdom that the billion-dollar titles can only dream of.
