Pandemic
Humanity is on the brink of extinction. As members of an elite disease control team, you’re the only thing standing in the way of the four deadly diseases spreading across the world. You must travel the globe protecting cities, containing infections from spreading, and discovering the cure for each disease. The fate of humanity is in your hands! In solo or couch co-op mode, you will assemble a team of specialists to save humankind. Each member of the team has their own set of skills that you must use efficiently. Recruit the Medic to quickly treat diseases, discover a cure faster with the Scientist, or stop infections from spreading with the Quarantine Specialist. Each role opens new possibilities and syncs with the other roles to offer new strategies. Pick from seven available character roles to create your elite team. Can you save humanity?

For better or worse, Pandemic on Switch is little more than a digital recreation of the hit board game that you can enjoy solo or grouped-up. The lack of features, side modes, online play and presentation are disappointing, but at its core this is still one of the more fun cooperative board games I’ve ever played in a compact form on the Switch for a reasonable price. While this isn’t the board game miracle cure, with the right expectations it’ll fix what ails you.

It’s a shame that the video game version of Pandemic is disappointing, because the board game itself is a lot of fun. There are tonnes of games that force players to compete against one another, but few require so much teamwork. Heavily focused on strategy, Pandemic encourages players to plan, discuss, maybe argue a little bit, but ultimately combine brain power to solve a big problem. There’s a lot to focus on at one time, but with some practice you and your friend are sure to master it.

Game nights are a remarkably popular way to engage with friends, which has led to the resurgence of tabletop board and card games of late. Pandemic has had quite a following, and this digital version does have its plus points – easier logistics, lower cost – and it will be familiar to those who already play the board game. For those who haven’t played before, the lack of a meaningful tutorial will be an obstacle to getting into it. However, its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass will greatly lower the risk of trying out the game. Now if you’ll excuse me, I don’t feel so good… hope it’s nothing serious. Pandemic: The Board Game is a perfectly functional version of the popular board game, now available for you to play on-the-go in solo mode or with some friends in local co-op. If this version had included an online component - bringing the co-operative strength of the game to the fore - and perhaps some more engaging means of getting to grips with its rules it would be a much more worthwhile and easy to recommend package. As it stands just now however it feels like a very basic edition with little in the way of options that coasts on the strength of its central component just a little too much.
