Every bit as fast and furious as the original, this game kicked my ass. I thought I was a good player, and then I tried Serious Sam II on Serious mode.

I've enjoyed Serious Sam 2 as much as I did the first release and its expansion. In some ways, it's better, I certainly laughed more at the corny humor and references to other 3D shooters ("I love collecting big guns," Sam quips on Planet Kleer. "It looks so … UNREAL.") On the other hand, I personally don't recall any scripting bugs that forced me to restart levels in the original Serious Sam, but I have come across this in the sequel (i.e., waves of enemies that don't trigger when they should, thus interrupting script sequences and blocking progress).

Still, Sam nails exactly what it's aiming to do, which is to throw scores of enemies at you in some of the most frantic firefights you'll ever experience. It's tough not to recommend it to FPS fans, but if you're insistent on realism or a convincing story, then maybe this game's not for you.
