Mashing together Starcraft and XCOM, Spaceland is one of the most fun, turn-based strategy games out there.

Tortuga Team is the real deal when it comes to turn-based tactics, and this entry is a perfect fit for the Switch — I loved every minute of it. Disclosures: This game is developed by Tortuga Team and published by Ellada Games.

Spaceland is a great game with a refreshingly tight approach to turn-based strategy. It’s very good as it is, but it could have been a classic if it got rid of the grind with just a bit of rebalancing. Disclosures: This game is developed by Tortuga Team and published by Ellada Games.

From its delightful visuals to its enjoyable SRPG gameplay, there's a lot to love about Spaceland and it's impressively accessible, too.Spaceland gameplay video → Braveland Trilogy Review Depixtion Review Switch ★★★★☆ There are so many Picross clones out there yet few nonogram games are as original as the gorgeously colourful Depixtion. Depixtion has you assemble pictures by mastering 3 nonogram puzzles each which correspond to red, yellow, and blue.

Spaceland on Xbox One is a game that wears X-COM influences on it’s sleeve, including tons of references to other pop culture stalwarts like Gears of War and Duke Nukem. It successfully captures X-COM’s gameplay with quickfire missions that always keep you on your toes, but ultimately does next to nothing with its plot, characters and presentation to entice players new to the genre to give it a spin.

Despite some obvious flaws, and some parts that were somewhat rough around the edges, Spaceland offers great fun for something not coming from big name studios. While it eschews a typical base building in favour of squad management, the small skill tree and equipment choices are interesting, while leaving a desire for more. Though linear, the tactical elements are largely highly competent. There are things that leave the player wanting more, but the game itself is very enjoyable, and any potential sequels will probably be even better.

In spite of these flaws, Spaceland is still one of the most surprisingly in-depth and engaging indie turn-based strategy games that big fans of the genre are likely to find. It wears its old school influences on its sleeve while still managing to add its own spin to the genre. The large cast of playable characters mixed in with its deep attention to strategy and combat give it almost a AAA feel at times.
