While Atlantis isn't exactly a new premise for adventure gamers, the lovely depiction of seldom-used 1930s settings and the game's rich storyline saves The Secrets of Atlantis from being just another first-person adventure clone. The many characters, each with a unique look and personality, are established nicely throughout the game and really help to develop the multiple layers of the story.

Playing is quite fun, and there is a good mixture of conversational clues, puzzles and fun things to see. The puzzles are fairly well-integrated, but not logical all the time. The slider really detracts, as players can’t move forward until they solve the dumb thing.

The Secrets of Atlantis is by all accounts a big improvement on the previous game, and I enjoyed its mix of styles. I think it needs tweaking; some bigger puzzles and less regurgitation for sure, and I would ramp up the noir and give it a real Raymond Chandler feel from top to bottom.

The Secrets of Atlantis: The Sacred Legacy is a wonderful glimpse at what could have been. You have a great premise and a great setting, but ultimately, the game falls flat with an uninspired story and frustrating, sometimes nonsensical, puzzles.

If Indy had encountered nonsense like this during one of his escapades, he'd have let the Nazis win. Secrets of Atlantis is best left in a watery grave.
