Did I have fun with Towaga: Among Shadows on Xbox? Yes. Do I wish that there was more to it? Even bigger yes. The alternate game modes and unlockable spells all feel pointless, and the story is lacking in many ways. Yet, despite these flaws, I couldn’t put the game down. Though it doesn’t feel like it lives up to its true potential, Towaga: Among Shadows is a unique shooter that I hope to see more of in the future.

Towaga: Among Shadows is a unique genre mash-up that just about gets away with it due to its attractive 2D animation and inventive upgrade system. The Joy-Con analogue stick might not be designed for such quick-paced play, but in short bursts it works fine.

Towaga: Among Shadows admittedly looks fantastic, but it just isn’t enough to pull it out from the realms of mediocrity. Its gameplay doesn’t excite in the way that it should and it grows stale too quickly, so it’s a struggle to recommended it even at its modest price. Still, if you ever spot it with a decent discount it might be worth picking up just for its sumptuous art and initial rush of unique gameplay.

Although Towaga certainly has some genuinely impressive qualities, particularly when it comes to its stunning visuals, there is not enough here to strongly recommend it to players. The game may be pretty to look at, but unfortunately it's a little too basic to make the translation over to PC or console gaming effectively. It can be fun getting so good at a twin-stick that you can stay static in the middle of the screen. This just isn’t the game where you are going to want to invest the time to hone your skills to the point you can do it. The ground levels of Towaga offer something interesting but are ultimately outweighed by the game’s lack of options and the lackluster flying mechanics that leave you constantly exposed and unable to move fast enough to play in the manner you’d want to.
