Overview

Ghat's story is far from over: Zeno Clash 2 picks up where the deliciously brazen first game left off. After 4 years of waiting, the sequel to the surreal first-person brawler brings more variety in combat and levels, and even more bizarre storytelling into the beguiling world of Zenozoik. Join forces with your former foe Rimat and battle against scores of angry denizens, preventing their dastardly machinations from being realized. Zeno Clash 2 welcomes new players to the Zeno Clash universe with a new game that will bring them into the universe and fill them in on the backstory. Returning players will delight in the connections between the new settings and the first adventure. All players will thoroughly enjoy playing a first-person brawler that provides a rarity in modern gaming: a truly unique experience. Zeno Clash 2 has beefed up its combat engine with precision punch targeting, blocking, and high-impact hits that only make the bone-crunching, face-rattling fistcuffs more satisfying. The new "Lock-on" function gives players a wider range of control for dishing out the damage. New RPG mechanics will allow Ghat and Rimat to punch harder, defend better, and recruit more powerful allies to aid in their quest. Zeno Clash 2 now harnesses the full power of the Unreal III engine to bring the bizarre and beautiful world of Zenozoik to life. ACE Team's boundless imagination brings gamers into a universe of surreal foes, fantastic locations, and truly unique visuals that is unlike anything else you will ever play. With the newly added drop-in/drop-out co-op play, Zeno Clash 2 invites you AND a friend to dive once more into the fray!

Zeno Clash 2 is a much bigger game than the original, although it’s not quite as open world as you’d have been led to believe, as you’re still confined to certain areas while you go roaming. You can however, go back and forth whenever you want in order to go looking for trinkets, moths (an NPC you can do sidequests for is obsessed with moths) and posts in the ground that let you level up, though why they just didn’t let you level up in game through progressing and beating others is anyone’s guess. It does however force you to go off the beaten path sometimes and drink in the sights, which is a good thing too, as even by its predecessor’s standard Zeno Clash 2 is beautiful, and the quirky, moody soundtrack emphasises how perversely picturesque it all is. Any iffy textures or bits of naff animation are overwhelmed by just how sumptuous looking and stylish the world of Zenozoik appears.

For the price, players can get a relatively fun beat ‘em up. The combo system is surprisingly deep and the co-op is fun to play. Sure, the story is overly strange and the overall plot is a little out there, but beating the absolute crap out of humanoid beasts and birds never really gets old. There is some fun to be had in Zeno Clash 2 as long as you keep an open mind when it comes to certain mechanics and the outlandish story.

There are many things to see in this land, but wandering around can feel empty. Strange men will ask you for strange favors, but the rewards for helping them are very small.

Zeno Clash II, like the original, is an interesting game. It falls slightly flat in the gameplay, but it's largely balanced by the world being so damn interesting to experience and wander around in. On the other hand, the combat does grow a mite repetitive before too long, so it really comes down to how players feel about traversing an interesting, alien landscape full of charm and weirdness.
