In the end, BAKERU is a delightful adventure packed with charm, offering a whimsical journey through a beautifully crafted world. The expansive levels, rhythmic combat, and fun driving segments keep things varied and engaging, while the game’s attention to detail and love for Japanese culture makes it feel like a heartfelt tribute to the country’s folklore. Although it may be on the easier side, the game’s feel-good vibes, family-friendly graphics, and enchanting world more than make up for it, whether you’re exploring the large 3D levels, collecting tidbits of real-world history, or engaging in tight, fun combat, BAKERU is a game that’s easy to love.

Bakeru is a warm, delightful thing and one of the best non-Nintendo platformers that I’ve ever played. Admittedly I’m partial to it given that I love roaming Japan for all its little regional quirks and specialties, and I loved discovering the developer’s interpretations of them here, but even if you’re not attuned to the game’s cultural resonance, its relentless joy will surely prove infectious.

Bakeru is a delightful modern 3D platformer that captures the essence of classic titles like Goemon. With its vibrant world, challenging combat, and engaging exploration, Bakeru stands out as a must-play for genre fans. Despite some minor shortcomings in its combat mechanics, the game’s overall execution and nostalgic appeal make it an unforgettable experience.

If you miss Goemon and the kind of off-beat Japanese humor that came with it, BAKERU delivers the fun while also being a gigantic platformer epic. This is the kind of game you used to see during the PlayStation 2 and Gamecube days but made with the dazzling veneer of modern technology and effects. BAKERU was reviewed on a Nintendo Switch using a code provided by Spike Chunsoft.

Bakeru is a highly endearing little 3D platformer, one with a well-polished design and lots of fun ideas to spice things up during its relatively lengthy adventure. It really commits to its bit, and that part of it is almost infectious. Some framerate issues keep this from being all it could be on Switch, and I think people who come into this expecting Goemon are going to be disappointed by the fact that it’s not even trying to be that, but otherwise this is a highly-recommended title to close out your summer with. SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5 Star Wars: Bounty Hunter ($19.99) There was a lot of merch put out around the releases of the films in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
