If you enjoyed playing Doom and Quake, be it back in the day or now, then you will enjoy Dread Templar. It has all the defining hallmarks of a game from that era along with the lessons learned in the last 30 years. It’s an old school inspired shooter that will take you back to the mid-90’s. Dread Templar is a fun, retro shooter for those who want a modern take on a 90s gameplay formula. Simple, sweet, and bloody, this game is sure to entertain despite a few under tuned features. Try Hard Guides was provided with a PC review copy of this game.

The mishmash between retro aesthetics and modern quality of life improvements creates a game that doesn’t innovate at all, but never needed to. Dread Templar is a stellar retro shooter that shines with its fast-paced gameplay and utterly stellar level design, with most of its issues being minute things such as poor (but very occasional) voice acting and some bizarre key mapping.

Dread Templar is a fairly shallow experience, but this isn’t a criticism. Dread Templar is at its best when there’s nothing but you, an arena, and some monsters for you to lazily circle strafe. Sadly, the additional systems just add fat to a game that doesn’t need the padding. Still, it’s absolutely worth playing, whether you’re a fan of shooters or just looking for something simple.
